Learning English using SRS's - Spaced Repitition Systems

Hello again!

This will be my first practical post on this blog [haha]!

This is a tool that I used for revision and I hope you may find it useful too!

Spaced Repetition Systems (SRS) are handy application softwares that can assist in your studies.
It is similar to using flash cards, but uses a program to make memorising more efficient using "spaced repetition".
The following examples shown are of the "Anki" application:

What is Spaced Repetition?

"Spaced repetition" is a technique to achieve memorization through a flashcard method.

Example:

Learning a new word:

1) [Day 0] The word is first introduced and tested

  • If correct = the word is saved to show in the next revision (next day)

  • If incorrect = it is repeated in the same day, until correctly answered

2) [Day 1] The word re-appears in the next day's revision deck

  • If correct = the word is saved to show in the next revision (in 2 days time)

  • If incorrect = it is repeated until correctly answered - the word is then reset to Day 0

3) [Day 3] The word re-appears in the day 3's revision deck

  • If correct = the word is saved to show in the next revision (in 3 days time)

  • If incorrect = it is repeated until correctly answered - the word is then reset to Day 0

4) This cycle continues until the word is considered memorized

Useful video on how to use Anki:

Where do I find cards for Anki?

Anki has a whole community of decks for any topic!

However, I recommend making your own decks!

The best thing about Anki is that it is customizable to your needs!

You can put words/sentences/phrases into your own personalised deck!

Sources can include:

  • Books / Textbooks

  • Lessons

  • Movies / TV shows

  • News / Podcasts

I'll go into more detail about this technique (which we call "sentence mining") in a future posts!
